What's the best way to get soft curls without using a hair iron?

A hair iron would do too much damage, and rollers just don't work. Do you use any products that get that effect? Sort of like how Kate Hudson usually wears her hair.

Have you tried rolling your hair around rollers while it is wet? We did a ton of "wet sets" in cosmetology school and they lasted a long time.
